I want to draw special attention to Jughead's leg, draped interestingly around Reggie's arm.

Yes, how about it? Well, I have a book called Mortified which is a collection of embarrassing things people wrote when they were younger. One girl wrote a Duran Duran fanfic at the age of thirteen involving exactly that. It begins with her parents dying while on vacation; she meets Duran Duran in the hospital (John Taylor's dad had a heart attack). She and John Taylor fall in love and have sex to Rio, but there is rising tension with Simon...

Dig Jinx Molloy's floating feet! Also the woman in fur about to be covered in red paint, long before PETA "thought of" it. (Do you know, PETA wants fish to be called "sea kittens", so that supposedly people will treat them better?)

This is Archie's reaction to finding out that Jughead is a good dancer:

this is why "archie is a drama queen" is its own tag.

When Valerie showed up uninvited, she didn't realize she was interrupting something, nor did she get the hint when Alan and Josie started EMPHASIZING specific words with meaningful looks...

in other news: my friend brought to my attention that often when I post a big picture the LJ layout cuts it off...you see I have a "widescreen" monitor at 1680x1050 and I think if your resolution is rather smaller some of the big ones get cut off. I'm sorry!! I'll start shrinking the really big pictures, probably the ones that are around 1000+ pixels horizontally. It's just that my screen is so HUGE I forget about the lesser-endowed, ya know (I'm not decrying motion of the ocean, but how many paper boats do you see in the ocean anyway? haters stick to ponds and bathtubs)

I'm not hip to most of the minor characters and plot arcs after, say, the 1980s, so when I read a more recent comic that involves them I just coast along vaguely and trust that it makes sense in context. This one involved some established love interest of Ethel's:

"Haha," I thought to myself. "That's pretty funny, I guess this guy's Main Character Trait is that he's really dumb, or maybe he never takes off his sunglasses. Either way, I like this self-deprecating humour."

And then you know what I realized?

HE'S BLIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow! You'd think that if the sunglasses didn't give it away, the really obvious SEEING-EYE DOG would have! I'm just too open-minded about accessorizing apparently. (or dumb)

Today I went to see the San Diego Junior Theatre put on Oliver!, it was...kind of...weird? I usually really enjoy seeing the Junior Theatre but I thought this was weird, OK? Maybe I'm just not the kind of person that kind of musical appeals to.

Anyway, there was strangulation, but you know what would have improved it?

Giant cold hands.

Yes I can see why this would cause Katy to lose consciousness, in fact it killed Nancy, even though the hands of Bill Sikes were only human. (that was a deep sentence, if you missed the biting social commentary)

I'm just surprised they would even mention it

Note that this is the last panel of the comic. That means that this is the punchline. "Thanks for saving me, but did you have to give me mouth-to-mouth?" Now, that is pretty dodgy. But let me just tell you this: in the context of the story, this makes no sense.

Let's talk about Archie Comics and the way they're formatted. Your typical story runs a few pages on some general theme and in the last panel it all comes to fruition in a cute little joke to tie it all up. Right? Except for occasional snappy one-liners, all the dialogue is directly relatable back to the main storyline, and it's this storyline that supplies the final punchline.

Looking only at this final panel, you could construct some elaborate storyline around it...when you know the punchline, you could build the set-up yourself. Maybe through some hilarious misunderstanding Jughead dragged Mr Weatherbee onto the beach and Archie thought Mr Weatherbee was a woman because Reggie tricked him into being a judge for a blindfolded kissing contest.

Here's what really happened: )

For the moment let's ignore the sexy part and talk shop...

Payboy?

Payboy...

Judging by the extra space it looks like it originally said "Playboy" and then was edited. Did they edit it because it was copyrighted or because it was suggestive...?

(also Alexandra always reminded me of Belle from Beauty and the Beast...)
